A truck carrying around $500,000 worth of fish crashed near Wellington today, closing the northbound lane of State Highway 1 and causing traffic delays.

The accident happened at the Paremata roundabout, 26km from Wellington, at 7.40am and was so loud it woke nearby residents.

The 40-tonne truck with a six-wheeler trailer was loaded with an estimated $500,000 of refrigerated fish.

The northbound lane was closed while a crane was used to lift the cab off the road and right the trailer in an attempt to easily recover the valuable cargo.

Acting Police area commander Eric Tibbott says it is unclear if damage to the truck occurred before or after the accident, and a full examination of the truck will be carried out to determine what caused the crash.

Nobody was injured in the crash.

It was not a load of fish, and the fishy smell is always there for all to smell..........they fish under the bridge there and leave the offcuts behind. The driver was more than competent at what she does, and it's ok to be having a laugh and smile with the cop investigating, it helps relieve the nerves that are already in shock, that she didn't get hurt is the best thing. Oh yeah, the fish was an assumption by the media, they assumed what was in the truck because of 2 factors, 1) the name of the company stock in the trailer and 2) the horrible smell that is always there. The driver interviews by the police were over by the time the media took their pictures, so the truckie can smile if she wants, she was happy to not be hurt

John you obviously do not know the driver. She does not take drugs of any kind not even tobacco. Nor does she drink any alcohol at all the night be she is due to drive. She is very highly skilled and experienced in many formed of vehicles. This is her 1st accident since she started driving trucks 4 years ago.

its a shame that the driver a woman could joke with police and laugh. It seemed she showed no remorse at all regarding what had happened its a shame for R and R relief drivers that one of their drivers could think it was funny that they may have damaged Trans Otways reputation and image

Its a shame that once again a temp driver with no client specific training or pre employment drug testing for that matter has caused great harm to a large comapany such as Trans Otway and the greater transport community.
