A train driver has been stood-down after running a red light on a commuter route into Wellington this morning.

The train was brought to a halt on the tracks on the Hutt Valley line after the incident - and passengers were delayed for about an hour.

KiwiRail says another driver was brought in so the commuter train, and others that were banked up behind it at the Taita station, could continue their journey.

KiwiRail spokesman Ross Hayward says the company has very strict protocols to ensure safety isn't compromised, but they're looking at how to speed up the process if it happens in the future.
