The new Transformers film has set the North American box office on fire after landing the biggest single-day ticket sales of the year.

The blockbuster sequel, which stars Shia LaBeouf and British model/actress Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, hit cinemas at midnight on Tuesday and went on to shift a staggering US$37.3 million worth of tickets in the US and Canada alone in its first 24 hours.

The figure suggests Transformers: Dark of The Moon is on course to break US$100 million over the Independence Day weekend.

In New Zealand, interest in the release of Transformers: Dark of the Moon was described by Paramount Pictures NZ as “overwhelming”.

The company confirmed that for a brief time on Wednesday morning the official local Transformers website was brought offline by the large number of users trying to access it simultaneously.

Transformers: Dark of The Moon is playing both 3D and 2D at cinemas throughout New Zealand this weekend, including Auckland’s IMAX theatre.
