Trevor Mallard has landed himself in hospital – and no, the member for Upper South hasn’t been brawling in the corridors of Parliament again – he came off his bike, racing on the weekend.
Trevor Mallard has a broken wing and a fractured femur.
“Cycling along pretty fast and clipped the wheel of another rider and went upside down and hit the road,” he says.
It happened on a cycle tour in Otago on Saturday.
The other two cyclists were able to carry on but Mr Mallard was brought to Dunedin Hospital for surgery on his thighbone.
But he says the accident hasn't put him off the sport, however, all he will be riding for a while is the hospital bed.
Surgeons haven't said how long it may take for Mr Mallard to become mobile on his own but using crutches will be difficult with a broken shoulder and suffice to say his fists won't be fighting for a while.
When 3 News found him today he was a little more sedate than usual.
“I've had some nice texts and emails from MPs while I've been ah – across the house – it’s been great.”
He received one more late this afternoon.
“We don't like to see him in that condition and we wish him a speedy recovery,” Prime Minister John Key said. “Tell him to go on the cycleway next time on his own so he can't hit another bike.”
Advice which may spur on Mr Mallard's recovery and return to the parliamentary fray.
