The man named New Zealander of the Year last year is also our most trusted individual, according to a new poll.
Scientist and inventor Ray Avery has taken out the top spot in the Reader’s Digest New Zealand’s 100 Most Trusted People survey.
Avery is joined by fellow scientists Sir Peter Gluckman and Sir Paul Callaghan, who take out second and third spots respectively.
The trifecta of scientists topples sports men from the top spots; in 2009, eight of the top 10 were occupied by current or former sports champs, followed by five in 2010. All Blacks Captain Richie McCaw fell from 11th to 55th place this year, while All White Ryan Nelson (15), former All Black Sir Brian Lochore (21) and All Black Brad Thorn (30) make up the only three sportsmen in the top 30.
Victoria Cross recipient Corporal Willie Apiata, who held the top spot for three years, came in at 14th.
Independent MP Hone Harawira is the least trusted New Zealander, coming dead last in the poll. He is joined in the bottom 10 by a raft of politicians including Bill English, Pita Sharples, Labour Party leader Phil Goff, Maori Party co-leader Tariana Turia, NZ First leader Winston Peters and former ACT Party leader Rodney Hide.
A new name on the list is Grey District Mayor Tony Kokshoorn, who earned his trust through his management around the Pike River mine tragedy. Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker has climbed 23 places to number 39 on the list after the Christchurch earthquakes.
