David Tua's heavyweight boxing bout against Shane Cameron was the fourth biggest individual event for the TAB since sporting betting first began in New Zealand in 1996.
The TAB today said $1.14 million was wagered on the fight, won by Tua via a second round knockout at Mystery Creek near Hamilton last Saturday.
TAB boxing bookie Mark Stafford said nearly 50,000 individual bets were placed on the fight by New Zealanders, with bets fairly evenly split between Tua and Cameron.
The biggest bet was $100,000 on Tua to win, paying $1.50, which came in about 20 minutes before the fight.
The top three biggest single sports betting events for the TAB are Tua's failed world heavyweight title bid against Briton Lennox Lewis in 2000 ($2.1m), the soccer World Cup match between Brazil and Turkey in 2002 ($1.3m) and the Bledisloe Cup rugby test between New Zealand and Australia in Wellington in 1996 ($1.15m).
