Boxing great David Tua has spent the day visiting quake-affected schools in Christchurch, courtesy of a generous local businessman.
Tua was auctioned on TradeMe as a "household handyman" to raise money for breast cancer research.
He didn’t show up empty-handed today at Freeville Primary in East Christchurch, presenting signed boxing gloves to the children who suffered the most during the February earthquake.
In August Tua auctioned himself off as a handyman and was purchased by Christchurch businessman Peter Montgomery for $25,000.
Mr Montgomery thought a day in the kitchen wasn't quite right for the seasoned fighter, and says Tua “needs to be shared”.
“I think the best way is to share him with the children,” he says.
“[Tua] enjoys it too – better than doing some domestic chores.”
Tua’s mother is a breast cancer survivor and he says he wants to do his bit.
“For me it's a fight worth fighting for,” he says.
“It's a fight you can't give up fighting, ‘cause you know that every day it is the same fight, and you know in your heart and soul you are doing it for the right reasons.”
