Police have this afternoon arrested two more teenagers following the attack on off-duty police officer John Connolly in Tuakau last month.

The two people appeared alongside the 11 others who had already been charged, at Pukekohe Youth Court today.

The charges were upgraded from assault to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

All 13 accused are between the ages of 14 and 19 and will reappear in the youth court later this month.

Mr Connolly, 39, was left unconscious and in critical condition after trying to break up a fight between a group of youngsters on Elizabeth St. Papakura area commander, Inspector Gary Hill said there were fears the officer would die as he was taken to hospital.

He received a fractured skull, broken jaw, several broken bones in his face, missing teeth, a broken ankle, a collapsed lung and bruises following the incident.

The first nine arrests were made after police executed search warrants at 10 south Auckland homes. Of those initially arrested, seven were from Tuakau and a brother and sister were from Papakura.

A community meeting was held in the Tuakau town hall last night to address the issue of youth violence, with angry residents saying it is time parents got in and “got their kids under control”.

Franklin District Mayor, Mark Ball, told 3 News the community has had enough.

“They’ve had an absolute guts-full of the behaviours that have been exhibited over recent weeks and months.”

One Tuakau resident told 3 News there was a significant problem with youth violence in the area.

She said the police do an excellent job – but are extremely under-resourced.

Police have reassured locals there is a plan to boost officer numbers.

“It will be delivered and those staff will form a six-person team at the Tuakau area,” Mr Hill said.

Mr Connolly is now out of hospital and recovering at home, however it is not known how long until he will be able to return to work.

No one to blame but the kids themselves and the parents in some cases. No discipline means no boundries. No boundries means no respect for others and all hell will break loose as it already has and will continue to do so until our young ones are tought the value of life and to respect other people.

It is not necessarily the parents fault, although in many cases it is.

I think that the real issue lyes with Government for example the abolishment of corporal punishment.

I believe that the cow who decided to go with the Anti-smacking Bill, and we all know who she is should be held accountable for our now violent society, and spoilt children who have no respect for any form of authority whatsoever.

How are we able to decongest our prisons when such laws create such mayhem?

Who suffers for congested prisons? The taxpayer.

Who suffers for our crime filled streets due to the Anti-smacking Bill?

We all do!

I believe these thugs need to suffer real consequenses for their destructive behavior. This was pure thug behavior by a bunch of wannabe jerkoffs who couldn't find somewhere private to mastabate so they took their fustrations out on the innocent off duty police officer. I dont care how old or young these thugs are, they all were a party to this beating. They thought they were tuff in a group in the community so I say trial them in a group then throw them behind bars as a group and see how tuff they really are. I can guarantee they will all become someones bitch within 24 hours.

Sadly the law is an ass and these thugs will probably get a smack on the hand and told to go home and behave themselves.

I seriously call for a law change and these Thugs should be the example used to promote harder++ penalties.

We (the community) need to get behind our police officers so they can continue to keep us and our families safe and sane.

I don't know why youths are so against Police, they are only there to help us and keep us safe. I say send them to the navy. Those little pricks think they're hard, lets see how hard they are when they're crying for their mummy. As for the parrents, they need to change the way they bring their kids up ie. violent video games and american gangsta movies etc. Kids these days are too spoiled and get away with way too much. Send them to the navy if they play up, a little disapline wont hurt them...
