Turangi shop owner fined heavily for selling tobacco to youths

The owner of a Turangi convenience store has been slapped with one of the biggest court-ordered fines dished out for selling tobacco to underage customers.

Sanjay Malaviya has been fined $750 on each of two counts, plus court costs, and has been banned from selling tobacco products for two months.

The Ministry of Health's National Director of Tobacco Control, Dr Ashley Bloomfield is comfortable with the punishment.

She says it is the store owner's fourth conviction for selling to under 18-year-olds.
