Maori Party co-leader Tariana Turia has reacted to former colleague Hone Harawira’s racial slur where he called her party “house n****rs”.
Mr Harawira made the comment on Facebook in response to the Government’s decision not to attend a hui on water rights.
Ms Turia says the comments were offensive, unfair and untrue.
“I’ve never been a house n****rs,” she says. “And I don’t take kindly to be called one.”
She says Mr Harawira is all talk and making empty promises to Maori.
“He goes around acting as if whatever he says and does is going to be taken up by the Government. Well I don’t think the Government is about to listen to Hone Harawira.”
Mr Harawira’s online tirade included comments that the Maori Party was controlled and led by Prime Minister John Key.
“Notice how John Key says none of his Maori MPs are allowed to go to the National Maori Hui on Water ... and two minutes later Tariana Turia and Pita Sharples say that they're not going," Mr Harawira wrote.
But Ms Turia says his comments are wrong and the Maori Party are not attending the invite-only hui because they weren’t invited.
“To create a perception that we are sell-outs and he’s the man is absolutely unfair and untrue and he knows it,” says Ms Turia.
She says the party is founded on being Maori ambassadors and acting in their best interests.
“It’s not me who acts against the interests of our people. Everything we stand for is about upholding the values, the kaupapa and tikanga of our people and we will continue to do so.”
