Police and security arrested two Sevens fans for storming the playing field yesterday and kicked out 40 others for drunk and rowdy behaviour.

Security was especially high yesterday after a man ran onto the field and tackled one Samoa’s players, Alatasi Tupou.

Six people were arrested in total yesterday. However, police say they are pleased with the behaviour of fans on the second and final day of the Wellington Sevens.

“Of the six people arrested, two relate to people running onto or attempting to go onto the playing field,” says Inspector Simon Perry, Hertz Sevens operation commander.

“The rest were for disorder offences. The 40 evictions were for behaviour offences and intoxication. Thirty people were denied entry due to intoxication and smuggling alcohol.”
