The bodies of two men have been discovered following a microlight crash near Westport.
The men, understood to be hunters, were discovered after the wreckage of the aircraft was spotted at Carter’s Beach at 9.30am.
A search and rescue helicopter made the discovery, after the pair failed to return at 8pm Wednesday.
Police are still on the scene.
Rescue Coordination Centre spokesman Michael Flyger says there was fog last night with low visibility.
“I don’t want to speculate on what has caused this, but visually it wasn’t great down there last evening, so that could be a factor”
The pair were reported missing at 8pm last night after they
failed to return home from a hunting trip.
“They both belonged to long-established Westport families, so they’d be very very well known in the community and it comes as a shock to everyone,” says Westport mayor Pat McManus.
