Two are dead and one seriously hurt in a Christchurch motor accident this evening following a police pursuit.

The crash happened at 8:10pm on the corner of Fitzgerald Ave and Gloucester St.

Police clocked a driver travelling at over 80km/h down Fitzgerald Ave, and decided to pull him over.

The driver stopped at a red light, and when the light went green he indicated he would pull over, but instead drove off at speed.
Police activated their sirens and made chase for about 600m when the fleeing driver hit another vehicle.

It is believed the two cars were a small 4WD and a four-door saloon.

There are two confirmed fatalities – one a man in his 70s.

The offender is a man in his 20s, and is said to be well-known to police.

Firstly, my sincere condolences to the family of the dead couple.
With regards to the driver who killed these innocent people it is about time we had a life for a life. This is nothing short of murder. There is no doubt he caused the death of two people. I suggest we use him for vehicle and accident testing. Strap him in a car and propel a car into his at speed. Let him sit there looking at the vehicle coming towards him knowing this will probably be the last thing he sees. Scum like this do not deserve to live. It is about time we dropped the nanny state mentality and got rid of people like this from society.

Here we go again I bet the media will say this accident is the police's fault. Idiots will run away from the police and then kill an innocent person. I think if you run from the police you should get an automatic goal sentence of 2 years. As a society we are way tooo soft on offenders. Bring in harsher penalities that actually fit the crime. If you take a life while trying to run from the police make the punishment fit the crime. Harden up NZ government its time to change the law in regards to running from the police. The police are only doing their job correctly and they seem to take the blame in accidents like this its tragic.

Very bad reporting and coverage of this story by TV3 on the 1030 news, makes it sound as if the police were at fault for chasing a car doing 80km an hour only facts should be reported not a reporter stating she has concerns about what police did.
