Two men charged over a shot fired in the midst of a gang confrontation in Gisborne city's main street have been remanded in custody.

The men, 31 and 33, were involved in a gang brawl between two groups in which a firearm was discharged near the Midway service station on Cobden Street about 1.45am on Sunday.

A cut-down .22 rifle was found nearby.

The 33-year-old man appeared in the Gisborne District Court on Wednesday on a firearms charge and an attempted wounding charge, and has been remanded in custody until Friday, Gisborne Police Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Scott told NZ Newswire.

He had not applied for bail, Det Sen Sgt Scott said.

The 31-year-old also appeared in court for unlawful possession of a firearm, and has been remanded on bail to a later date.

The 33-year-old man had turned himself in at the Gisborne Police Station.
