Two youths, one 16 the other 17, were arrested and charged this afternoon with the rape and sexual assault of an Asian tourist in Opotiki on Monday night.

Police said an interview with one of the teenagers led to his alleged co-offender.

When police disclosed the rape yesterday they described it as "brazen, serious and alarming".

They said two men entered an Opotiki house shortly before 10pm Monday, forced their way into the victim's bedroom and violated her.

Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Standen of Eastern Bay of Plenty crime services unit, said today the victim was currently in the care of Victim Support.

He praised her courage and strength during the investigation.

"Her recall of events has been of significant assistance to our investigation."

Mr Standen said the woman did not want to be named and he did not specify her home country or how long she had been in New Zealand.

He added both teenagers would appear in Whakatane District Court tomorrow where police would oppose bail and request another court appearance on Friday.

If people choose to do terrible crimes like this and it can be proved beyond doubt they are guilty they should die. If these two teenagers had been asked before they committed this crime if they thought it was wrong to do something like that, they would undoubtedly have said yes. Therefore they knew the difference between right and wrong and they made the poor choice. Now they have to answer for that.Simple.

Just heard from my brother in law in China that he saw on TV a travel warning for going to NZ due to the recent crimes. It is very sad that a few horrible people can ruin our reputation and saftey for the rest of us. Like the other commenters, my heart goes out to the victim, I wish her the best of luck.

They are a product of a society where we tolerate undisciplined uneducated, arrogant, thugs learning their trade in abuse of others, from their abusive parents, and all the way thru the education system!. They are a product of a society with liberal fascist views that say "uneducated children" know the difference between right and wrong, and cannot be corrected for holding the wrong views. Hanging them would be the kindest punishment, as we spared them the light smack when it would have made a real impression.
