Upcoming Electronic Arts title Medal of Honor, which allows players to adopt the role of the Taliban, is a "tasteless product”, Britain's defence secretary said Sunday, calling on retailers to show their support for troops by not selling it.

Liam Fox said he was "disgusted and angry" by the highly anticipated first-person shooter.

"At the hands of the Taliban, children have lost fathers and wives have lost husbands. It's shocking that someone would think it acceptable to recreate the acts of the Taliban against British soldiers," he said in a statement.

"It's hard to believe any citizen of our country would wish to buy such a thoroughly un-British game. I would urge retailers to show their support for our armed forces and ban this tasteless product."

The company did not immediately respond to e-mails from the Associated Press, but spokeswoman Amanda Taggart was quoted by the Sunday Times as saying the game's format "merely reflects the fact that every conflict has two sides”.

"We give gamers the opportunity to play both sides. Most of us have been doing this since we were seven: someone plays cop, someone must be robber," the newspaper quoted her as saying.

"In Medal of Honor multiplayer, someone's got to be the Taliban. Nobody who plays videogames is going to be shocked or surprised by this."

Other versions of Medal of Honor have been set in the World War II era. The new version is scheduled to be released in October.

Quote MoD Wayne Mapp "A new electronic game allowing players to become Taleban insurgents "undermines the values of our nation", Defence Minister Wayne Mapp says"
"Hundreds of New Zealand servicemen and women have put their lives on the line in Afghanistan to combat terrorism"

Hahaha, couldn't expect anything less from the NZ Govt, PC Nation that we are today.

Also Wayne Mapp we don't combat terrorism, we build schools so taliban can blow them up when we leave because our country was to PC to get off the sidelines.

Without looking into this game. All military style games i've played, the single player story has always been played through the allied side not, enemy side. It's only been the multiplayer side that you can play the bad guys. Also to note gamers don't select a side because they want to kill US/british/ NZ if they every make it into a game, they select that side because 1. They have a weapon that they like, 2. Friends 3. Other side is full of noobs, 4. other side is full.

It's a game and the more media it gets the better for EA,retailers and gamers.

It takes at least 2 to have a war. So it could also be said "At the hands of the British, children have lost fathers and wives have lost husbands. It's shocking that someone would think it acceptable to recreate the acts of the British against Taliban soldiers," Stop complaining, If you don't like it, heres an idea DON'T PLAY/BUY IT!!!

oh my god! its just a game! its not real! if you dont like the game then dont buy it! adults should be able to buy whatever game they want and children dont get influenced by games! just leave us gamers alone! just because a few old idiots dont like the game does not mean millions of people who want to buy it should suffer!
