A British politician has appeared in court on charges he tried to pin a speeding penalty on his spouse.

Liberal Democrat lawmaker Chris Huhne stepped down as Energy and Climate Change Secretary after he was charged on February 3 with perverting the course of justice.

Prosecutors say Huhne persuaded his now ex-wife, economist Vicky Pryce, to accept a speeding penalty on his behalf in 2003, to avoid a driving ban.

The pair split in 2010 after he was exposed as having an affair with his public relations adviser, Carina Trimingham.

On Thursday, Huhne appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court alongside Pryce, who faces the same charge.

They were ordered to stand trial at London's Southwark Crown Court, and granted bail until their next hearing on March 2.
