The racially offensive image of Michelle Obama has been removed from the website, Hot Girls, which was hosting the image.

The picture of first lady – depicting her as a monkey - appeared at the top of the list when users searched for pictures of Michelle Obama using Google.

The Hot Girls blog has since removed the image and posted a brief apology and explanation.

Google Inc. apologised earlier and placed a text ad above the image titled "Offensive Search Results" stating that "Sometimes our search results can be offensive. We agree."

Users who then click on the ad are directed to a letter from Google that explains its results "can include disturbing content, even from innocuous queries" but notes that Google doesn't endorse content on these websites.

Google says its search formula relies on thousands of factors to rank a

webpage's importance, and says it doesn't eliminate search results simply because of user complaints. However, Google says it will take down images in certain cases, such as when required by law to do so.

"We apologise if you've had an upsetting experience using Google," the company wrote.

Mountain View, California-based Google also posted about the issue in a user support forum.

Spokesman Scott Rubin would not elaborate on how the image ended up as the number-one result for the first lady.

The Google letter says "a site's ranking in Google's search results relies heavily on computer algorithms using thousands of factors to calculate a page's relevance to a given query."

Rubin said the company did remove one site displaying the image from its results because it included viruses, which Google policy prohibits. But a different website later posted the same image, he said.

The White House declined to comment.

This is not the first time Google has apologised for content in its search results. The company issued a similar response in 2004 when the top result for the term "Jew" pointed to an anti-Semitic website.

Political correctness and censorship, just what we have come to expect from Google (remember, Google still helps the Chinese Govt. sensor their content and turns in search traffic to them). No First Amendment Rights for Google, US or abroad, only what brings in profit.

Why?

Was the photo offensive to most yes, but while I think it was an offensive photo, I dont agree with her nor her husband policies.

I am a minority myself and am not a racist but I think we got sold "hope" and "change" by a snake oil salesman.

The US is in deep trouble.

So you're implying, "Dumbasses", that Dubya is mentally retarded, based on stereotypical characteristics of mental retardation attributed to him, therefore he looks like a monkey, and therefore all retarded people subsequently and stereotypically look like monkeys. Kind of offensive if you look at it that way, really. After all, retardation is a disorder that people can't help or control.

Two of the commenters beneath me are dumbasses. It wasn't a racial slur at Bush, it was a knock on his intelligence and mannerisms. It's a different kettle of fish to use the historically racist comparison of a black person to a monkey, particularly when this is the only link between the two in racists' minds.

Stick it on a white man's face and everyone cheers in laughter. Stick it on a black woman's face and everyone jeers in disgust. That's political correctness for you.

how is this photo racially offensive? Was it racially offensive when the same was done to George Bush? No. It was humor, as it this one.
