One of the biggest sporting events in the US is to shut down as hurricane Irene approaches.

Reporter Dave Worsley is in New York and says from Saturday evening their time the U.S Open Tennis Championships will close - meaning the courts are not available on Sunday:

“At the moment it’s just the Saturday late afternoon and the Sunday and then on the Monday the tennis is meant to go ahead. However we’ll just have to wait and see what happens there. People like Roger Federer, Serena Williams and Raphael Nadal may just have to wait a couple of days before they play their matches.”

New Yorkers hungry for information crashed the city's website looking for news on evacuations or service shutdowns.
