The number of people getting the unemployment benefit has dropped, and so has the total number of New Zealanders on benefits.

Four thousand fewer Kiwis are getting the unemployment benefit compared with a month ago.

The drop has been attributed to government schemes which target youth unemployment by subsidising employers to create new jobs for young people.

"More than half of those that came off the unemployment benefit in February were young, so aged under 24, so that's great for us," says Social Development Minister Paula Bennett. "Some of that is attributed to the Job Ops and Community Max, some is just employers standing up and taking on more young people."

Ms Bennett says it's the single biggest drop in the unemployment benefit since the recession began.

I understand that not all job seekers are included in the unemployment figures - only those who qualify for unemployment or who register? If this is so - then the official figures are wrong.

That makes unemployment going "up "if just 4000 came of with students going back.

One term "Bennett"

Lightseed. That's what Bennett claims. If you believe that you'll believe anything.

Oh lightseed, you idiot... so stupid.

Paula Benett just said on National TV that she was making you CEO of the Ministry.

They need a gulible fall guy.

They said in December that the unemployment benefit numbers were up because of students.... and now that those students have gone back to uni.... well its attributeable to everything but them going back to uni lol.

The fact is the drop is because uni students have gone back to university.... these students are generally all under 24.

LOL lightseed your pants are on fire.... wait, calm down put the extinguisher down, just because I said it was true.. doesnt make it true.

And this is very much the case for Paula Bennett.

you go on and on and on like an idiot about how labour politicians lie.. but your homoerotic love affair with key wont allow you to see that National does it just as well.

read the article, the drop was not due to university students going back to school, it was due to programs placing unemployed youth in employment.

It's a lie, all young people who are done with university I know, are off to abroad, usually Australia. Now older working people too in their 30's and 40's have decided there is nothing to do here and are going.

How much of the drop could be due to students beginning their studies in the last fortnight. Interesting how Ms Bennett takes the credit for any drop in the unemployment numbers but would not accept any accountability when we had record numbers a couple of months back

Because it couldn't possibly have anything to do with the university semester starting, could it.
