The University of Auckland's Health Service will now charge $12 for consultations

A hike in university healthcare costs will leave some students unable to afford doctor visits.

The University of Auckland's Health Service will now charge $12 for consultations, which were previously free.

Arena Williams, president of the Auckland University Students’ Association, says the new fee will impact those who cannot otherwise afford medical care.

"I think some students can afford to pay that $12 fee, but a lot of students really relied on the health services for that really basic level of health care that you can't access in other providers at low cost."

Ms Williams is calling for better quality health care if the fee remains.

$12 dollars, shit thats cheap. Try having a low wage and paying for everything else and not having a community services card because winz claims you "earn to much over the threshold". University students have it good. After going to uni they can get high paying jobs, go overseas, travel. If you are uneducated (not everyone is academic) you can be stuck at the bottom. Maybe if some of them stopped boozing they might afford it. Ps this is a wide sweeping comment because I know some students do have it hard but so do a lot of us. I don't have a doctor because they are only taking people in the area they live, and the area I live are all booked up. It was $120 for a 10 minute emergency consultation when I last went for a prescription repeat last year. I have not renewed it because of the cost. Hell $12, they have got it good from where I am sitting.
