For the last week nearly 500 unicyclists have been rolling, jumping, racing and hopping around the capital as part of the Unicycle World Championships, or Unicon.

Today Wellington's blustery weather brought extreme conditions to the extreme end of the sport.

"Street unicycling's very similar to skateboarding in that the riders have three or four-minute time limits, and they've got to pull of as many amazing impressive tricks as they can without falling off, and sort of linking tricks together as well," says organiser Jo Dyson.

"You go faster than you did with normal unicycling stuff, and there's just a big element of danger," says contestant Christian Huriwai.

But the danger's a drawcard rather than a deterrent, and this lot don't let the odd broken bone stand between them and their wheel.

"I've broken my wrist a couple of times, but that's about it," says Huriwai.

"I've broken both of my fingers, but that's about it," says Dyson.
