Society has evolved greatly since the hunter-gatherer days, but more and more Kiwis are finding that a little foraging can be fun and even financially beneficial.
Free wild food - like fruit trees, herbs and mushrooms - are still in abundance even in urban environments.
The main reason most New Zealanders are not tapping into these bountiful natural resources is they don’t know where to look.
That is where Christchurch local and urban forager Kerry Nisbet comes in.
He and a group of friends started the Otautahi Urban Foraging group, which has created a public map on Google, showing where to find various natural goodies.
“Myself and a group of friends we share food share resources and it just seemed a natural extension of that,” he says.
The map displays exactly where food and other resources can be found - you can even get directions
Would-be forages are best to stock up in autumn or head out in spring, but Mr Nisbet says it is surprising what is around even at this time of year.
Mr Nisbet says there are plans to expand the map outside of Christchurch as well as add recipes and photos.
