Robin van Persie swats Gary Caldwell's offer of a handshake away

The Emirates home crowd were also shocked after just eight minutes when Wigan took a 2-0 lead.

But what happened at the end of the match highlighted just how much Arsenal players were frustrated with the loss.

The English Premier League’s top goalscorer refused to shake hands with Wigan’s Gary Caldwell.

Caldwell tried to shake hands but van Persie – although initially looking as though he would – continually swatted his hand away. Caldwell then looked to ride the Arsenal striker by offering his hand over and over.

Can you image it if it was Luis Suarez, the whole of England will be up in arms against him, I wonder if Fergy think that Robin is a disgrace to the English football, and so on, and so on, very hypocritical. Double standards as usual.

Sorry gents but a handshake is a right handed gesture; something that Caldwell is clearly going for; RVP petulantly resisting when (captain to captain) he should accept the offered hand. Vital that these moments are correctly done... kids are looking and learning...

You are such a bunch of one-eyed Gooners! RVP CLEARLY offers his left hand only in a back handed gesture. A hand shake is ONLY with the right hand - RVP did this deliberately, Caldwell was right not to accept it.

We didnt deserve to lose this one but the early goals showed our defensive incapabities. We attack too much that we forget we have to defend. All in all, this was a wobbler to challenge us for the chavs game. Up gunnerz!

I'm afraid I would disagree with this interpretation of what happened at the end of the match. It looks as though Van Persie responded by attempting to shake Caldwell's hand on a couple of occasions but Caldwell pulled his hand away repeatedly whilst taunting him. Eventually Van Persie clearly got frustrated and squatted Candwell's hand away.
