Auckland will host a new half Ironman Triathlon event from 2012 which will be the official Asia-Pacific Championships.

Announced today, the race will give competitors the opportunity to qualify for the world half Ironman Championships in Las Vegas.

10-time NZ Ironman Champion, Cameron Brown, has already expressed his enthusiasm for the event.

“It’s great, it’s a beautiful harbour swim,” he says, “The bike is going to be very challenging going over the Harbour Bridge twice and some good rolling hills along the busway route and then along the water front as well.”

“The run is completely flat but (there is) great spectator viewing out there.”

The race is expected to attract more than 1200 athletes.
