Defending champions Australia have come from behind to open their Champions Trophy hockey campaign with a  3-2 win over Spain in Auckland on Saturday.

After skipper Jamie Dwyer had scored a brace, the world No.1  Kookaburras snatched victory five minutes from time when Desmond  Abbott latched onto a partial clearance from a penalty corner to fire home.

After both sides had early penalty corner opportunities that brought great saves from Australian keeper Andrew Charter and Spanish counterpart Francisco Cortes, the Kookaburras hit the front after 10 minutes.

Midfielder Eddie Ockenden made an incursion down the left to set up Dwyer, who produced a neat finish.

Spain struck back with two goals in two minutes late in the first half.

Jorge Gabriel Dabanch made the Australians pay for losing the ball deep in their own territory to pull Spain level, before Eduard Tubau fired home from the edge of the circle.

Tubau has a great chance from close range to increase the margin early in the second spell, but Charter flicked his attempt over the bar.

Dwyer got the Kookaburras back on terms seven minutes into the half with a great shot from a narrow angle, before Abbott applied the killer blow.

Australia, who are seeking a record fourth Trophy title in a row, play Great Britain on Sunday in a repeat of the 2010 final in Germany.
