Bondi Beach, in Sydney, Australia, was awash with colour as surfers took to the night-time waves wearing neon-lit wetsuits.

A group of 17 surfers, comprising local board riders, their friends and some members of the local surf lifesaving club, wired their wetsuits with coloured neon tubes that glowed in the dark.

Using custom-made surfboards with a neon wire inlay, the group braved the storms that were gathering in the area, and took to the waves at Sydney's Bondi Beach for some night surfing.

The event was organised to welcome the arrival of summer in Australia, which officially begins on December 1.

Surfer Victoria Larnach, who participated in the event, said it was a lot of fun.

"It was great. It was a little cold when we went out but waves were good, and everybody was having a blast. Yes, it was fun. Party waves and freaking out. It was great. I just knew some people, just some friends gave me a call and said, hey, come on down, check it out and, why not, it's summer," she said.

Catching waves at night was a challenge for the participants, as in darkness it is not always possible to know when a wave is approaching.

"And it's crazy, too, 'cause it's so dark out, you can't see at night. You just feel it. And then when you're on it you can just see all the lights and see the face of the wave," said Larnarch.

The neon surfing event was part of the Welcome to Summer activities in Sydney.
