I never thought about grunting covering the sound off the strings when a shot's played but that makes sense. I also read that the grunt in effort increases the power, just a natural push of well, more grunt in the shot. I do think the shoes have got to go though.

Havent' been able to watch tennis for years due to grunts and yes the squeaky shoes. Also have you noticed the dull monotone voices of the tennis players? there seems to be absolutely no life when speaking at the press conference. Mens tennis and grass is better but since that Monica Seles years ago, just got turned off tennis all together.
