Germany's Maximilian Nagl got himself into an early lead from the starting gate in the MX1 Race 1 of the Benelux Grand Prix in Lierop, Netherlands but that was a sign of things to come – highs and lows as competitors jostled for positions.
Antonio Cairoli was seventh after being squeezed through the first turn.
Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team-mate Ken de Dycker started from seventh but was up to third by the second lap, and it was where the Belgian would finish Race 1.
Cairoli managed to battle his way up to the front and finally took the lead on lap thirteen, when he got past Nagl, and the Italian went on to win the race by 8.556 seconds with Nagl in second place.
In Race 2 there was a good start for Nagl once again, but a fall at turn four meant the German rider failed to finish the race as the foot peg of his KTM bike was completely broken.
Portugal's Rui Goncalves also came off his machine in the incident, however the Honda rider managed to recover and would eventually finish eighth in Race 2.
There was good battle for third between Tanel Leok, Evgeny Bobryshev and Shaun Simpson.
Leok finally managed to get past Bobryshev to move into fourth and then went past Simpson.
By the finish third-placed Leok was almost ten seconds clear of the Russian Bobryshev, who took fourth position ahead of Simpson.
Up front Cairoli won his second race of the day, finishing over fifteen seconds ahead of second-placed De Dycker.
The two race wins saw Cairoli take his sixth Grand Prix victory in a row, while De Dycker finished second overall and Leok of Rockstar Energy Suzuki World was third.
Cairoli holds a 76-point advantage in the MX1 Championship over Clement Desalle and could win the title should results go his way at the Grand Prix of Europe, which will be held at the Italian track of Faenza.
