He’s been on fire for the Chiefs at halfback this season, but halfback Tawera Kerr-Barlow didn’t fire up as much as he could have –should have – over the controversial late TMO-awarded try to give the Hurricanes the win.
The Friday Night Super Rugby match had the Chiefs in front until Dane Coles crossed, it went up stairs and the Television Match Official looked to take a liberal viewpoint and awarded the try despite video evidence not actually sealing the try as a done deal.
"I was obviously quite confident that I had my hands under the ball and stopped him short but we shouldn't need to leave it down to a TMO's decision to decide the fate of our game," Kerr-Barlow said after the match in Wellington. "There's nothing we can do about it. We'll just take it on the chin and look forward from here."
Ker-Barlow left it up to the match official and in got on the PC official Chiefs’ line of no complaints.
"But as I said, we shouldn't have to leave it down to that and there were a lot of areas tonight that we have to improve on and where they punished us."
Coach David Rennie did say he couldn’t see the ball cross despite the many replays, but he puts the onus on his players to even letting it get to that juncture.
"But in the end whether I thought it was a try or not probably doesn't matter. The point is we shouldn't have put ourselves in that situation so we've only got ourselves to blame."
