Australian Danny Green is the new International Boxing Organisation cruiserweight world champion after overcoming Kiwi Shane Cameron.

The victory earned Green a fourth world title, a unanimous points decision at Melbourne's Hisense Arena.

Green reclaimed the IBO crown that he lost last year to American Antonio Tarver, who was later stripped for doping which left the belt vacant.

The 39-year-old West Australian, who is tipped to retire after this fight, showed he still had the speed and firepower to outclass his bigger opponent.

The three judges scored the fight 119-109, 116-112 and 116-113.

Green's record is now 33-5 after 11 years in the game.

From Auckland, natural heavyweight Cameron had to shed almost eight kilos to make the catch-weight of 89kg - under the regulation cruiserweight mark of 90.7.

After sending American Monte Barrett to the canvas in spectacular fashion in his last start, Cameron was expected to bully Green but the Australian had his measure.

A cut above the New Zealander's eye opened up during the second round, although Green was also battling a bloody nose with the pair doing as much wrestling as throwing punches as they felt their way.

Cameron's hefty weight loss didn't appear to affect his stamina and the contest remained a fairly even affair throughout with both boxers landing some heavy blows.

The sell-out crowd were on their feet in the 11th round when Green put Cameron to the canvas but the Kiwi rose to box on.

Trailing on points, the only way Cameron was going to become the first New Zealand-born professional boxer in more than a century to win a world title was a knock-out but Green was too experienced to let that happen.

Not much more to say than what KELEFUA mentioned. While I can't argue that Green was the clear winner, he certainly had an edge going in. Arguing the weight loss was smart, it isn't healthly to drop the weight so fast, the double weigh-in only added to that, I wonder how dehydrated he got before the final weigh-in, green argued specifically for 89 beyond the required 90.7 to ensure Cameron was further away from his natural size. I'd say with the weight fluctations and dehydration(especially in the last few days) his immune system was likely lower than average and he was sapped of strength and energy. Overall Green dictated the fight and with good strategy, he boxed well from the outside and as the fight wore on and Cameron tired he also was winning in close too. I found the clinches boring as I usually do in boxing but green effectively neutralised Cameron but wearing him out and getting inside Shane's head. I can't really say how it would have panned out under better circumstances for Shane but to be fair the Green is 39 and had some form of rib injury, and when it came down to it the smarter fighter prevailed. Hard luck kiwi's, for me it's back to watching the UFC where remaining on your feet at the end of a match is a victory in itself.

IBO world championship belt - Sorry but this is not even a recognised championship.

To make a big deal of it that Shane would be only the second NZ bornworld champion in 100 years. Too much hype over a fight that means nothing in the real world of boxing.

Jones - If you didn't see, Henry Shucster, Cameron's trainer was giving Shane blue gatorade.

Rae - Get over it with what's legal and what's not. Styles make fights and Cameron called for Green to stand toe to toe and he got what he asked for. Green outsmarted Cameron and he could not adapt to anything else.

I know his camp said that weight loss had nothing to do with it but as trainer and nutritionist I know that it makes a lot of difference. He was fatigues early and lacked power in his punches. If it wasn't for his heart he would of been KO in the mid to late rounds.

Where to now? Well, I don't think he can take the cruiserweight division and he's not cut for the heavyweight division either.

It's back to the drawing board for Team Cameron.

Big heart but takes more than that to be a world champion.

@mike o Neil, say that comment of yours to Shane Camerons face and see if your heads still attached to your shoulders 2 sec later.
Blaming Camerons defeat on the Maoris (because thats what your comment is suggesting) shows your true racist self. This country doesnt need morons like you , nor does the sport of boxing.

Just a couple of points, I didn't think it was legal to hold a rivals head with one hand whilst punching him in the side of the head with the other hand; also didn't think it was legal to elbow punch to the head, if you watch this video you will clearly see both!!!
