The ninth round of the MX1 got off to a strong start on the wet track at Uddevalla in Sweden.
And it was Christophe Pourcel forced his way into an early lead.
But Clement Desalle found a way through after seven laps, but championship leader Antonio Cairoli - who had been in fifth position - found himself coming to a halt on the second lap, stuck in heavy mud.
A battle ensued between Desalle and Pourcel with Desalle eventually going through, while Sebastien Pourcel was riding down in third place and aiming to clinch a place on the podium alongside his brother.
Desalle held on to take the win.
Championship leader Cairoli found himself unable to finish the race - the first time he has failed to finish all season.
He held a 47-point advantage going into the race, but this was slashed to 22 points by his failure to complete the race.
Jonathon Barragan tried to make a quick start to the second race, but Cairoli enjoyed a better start and was leading after the first corner.
But once again it was Christophe Pourcel and Desalle who forced their way to the front.
Cairoli found himself in another nightmare situation as he got stuck in a deep mud hole - again he was unable to finish the race.
Shaun Simpson was having a great run in third place, and should have had enough to finish in third place overall, but he too was hampered by the mud on the course allowing Kevin Strijbos to pass him and put some pressure on the top two.
But Desalle held onto win with Christophe Pourcel second and Strijbos doing just enough to take third.
Desalle took the overall win and with it, the top spot in the season standings after Cairoli failed to finish either race.
The tenth round will take place in Latvia later this month.
