Helicopters have spent hours battling a huge blaze in Wellington’s Happy Valley this morning and will likely continue throughout the day until it is out.

The fire began at around 2am and by the time 3 News arrived at 5am, three helicopters with monsoon buckets were fighting the blaze.

More than 30 fire trucks and their crews fought the blaze from the ground.

At around 8am, the blaze was under control but it flared up again at 10am and headed towards a number of properties.

It was brought under control at around midday.
