The oil slick from Rena, the stranded cargo vessel, has become more serious than officials first thought.

Four birds have been found dead so far and more are expected to follow as fuel oil continues to spread.

Forest and Bird is keeping a close eye on the situation but says it couldn't have come at a worse time with the breeding season just beginning.

Forest and Bird’s marine advocate Karen Baird spoke to Firstline this morning.

This is shocking... with the govt using corexit they are commiting murder of sealife and it can effect the coastline much worse that the oil itself. there are eco-friendly products that convert oil in to harmless organic material.. sadly our govt wont use these products as they are corrupt and in the pockets of oil companies! thats the bottom line.. this is so wrong!! this link is for a healing image to focus on for the harbour and he beings there. http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150333979747428&set=a.492494592427.264998.688817427&type=1&theater
