John Isner played some of the best tennis of his career to defeat Roger Federer and hand the US an unexpcted 2-0 lead in their Davis Cup clash with Switzerland.

When Federer won the first set 6-4, it looked as if the Swiss was on course for a routine win in the first round match.

But Isner hit back to take the next three sets 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 on the clay courts of Fribourg on Friday (February 10).

It was world number three Federer's first defeat in the Davis Cup in 15 matches.

"Yeah, I played really well today," Isner said after the match.

"That was probably the biggest win, actually it was the biggest win of my career and I'm very happy to have played like I did today. I owe a lot to all my team-mates there and especially Captain Courier, he has been on to me in practice to do all the right things, and that is what I did today."

Earlier, Mardy Fish and Stanislav Wawrinka battled for more than four hours, American Fish eventually coming out on top.

He won 6-2, 4-6, 4-6, 6-1, 9-7, much to the delight of US coach Jim Courier.

It means that hosts Switzerland will have to win Saturday's (February 11) doubles and Sunday's (February 12) reverse singles to progress to the last eight.

France or Canada await the winner of Switzerland's tie with the US.
