It’s been a great start to the Junior Football Ferns’ campaign in Miyagi, Japan, winning their opening match of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Group A.

The 2-1 victory over Switzerland means that if New Zealand win one of their remaining two pool games they will qualify for the last 16 quarterfinal stage of the tournament.

The Kiwis took the lead through an Evie Millynn 39th minute goal, finishing off a ball cut back from Olivia Chane. Rosie White made it 2-0 in the 52nd minute while Switzerland could only manage a late consolation goal in the 90th.

Coach Aaron McFarland was extremely happy with his side’s performance, the win the ideal birthday present to help celebrate his 40th.

"Winning is the only way to start if we want to progress out of the group and that's the goal this group have set,” he was reported as saying.
