Lady Gaga has dressed up in drag to open the MTV Video Music Awards.

Appearing as her male alter-ego in her video ‘You and I’, Joe Calderon, the pop-star told the audience what Lady Gaga stands for.

"When she gets on stage, she holds nothing back," Calderon said.

She then launched into a performance of her hit ‘You and I’.

Gaga wore a dark suit with white t-shirt, a far cry from last year’s raw meat dress.

She later joined VMA winner Britney Spears on stage to introduce a performance by Beyonce, who had just announced her pregnancy on the VMA carpet.

While performing Beyonce said: “I want you to feel the love that’s growing inside of me.”

Her husband Jay-Z was given several congratulatory back-slaps by Kanye West.

At the end of her performance, Beyonce rubbed her stomach to applause from the audience.
