The long-awaited fight between Floyd Mayweather Junior and Manny Pacquiao could be on for May after the American challenged the Filipino via the Internet.

WBC welterweight champion Mayweather has been sentenced to prison for 90 days for assaulting his ex-girlfriend, but a judge last week postponed imprisonment until June to allow the boxer to fight an unnamed challenger in May.

Now the five-division world champion has challenged WBO welterweight champion Pacquiao to be his opponent in what could be the most lucrative boxing match ever.

Mayweather tweeted: 'Manny Pacquiao I'm calling you out let's fight May 5th and give the world what they want to see. My Jail Sentence [sic] was pushed back because the date was locked in. Step up Punk.'

The bout is eagerly anticipated because the two fighters are widely considered to be the best pound-for-pound boxers on the planet.

There was no immediate response from eight-division world champion Pacquiao, but he has met promoter Bob Arum recently.
