The boss of the internet

The boss of the internet

During the second reading of the Copyright (Infringing File Sharing) Amendment Bill last night, National MP Jonathan Young compared the internet to Skynet, the fictional, evil super computer network that tried to wipe out humanity in the Terminator movies.

"Do you remember the movie, The Terminator?" Mr Young asked, to loud guffaws. "I'm sure that you do, and the computer system called Skynet that ruled the world, is like the internet today."

Watch the full speech.

I find this very amusing, the politicians think that they can control the Internet with these laws. And some Noobs and general masses who have been taught step by step instructions how to torrent films and music are now crying bloody murder because they will loose their Internet connection. When the technology already exists to cover your IP tracks and torrent via encryption. Some people will be slowed down by this law but my guess is the majority of people will learn their way around it very fast. The heavy hand of government is not only large and powerful it is also slow and cumbersome, MPs like Jonathan Young need to wake up to the fact they are swimming against the tide.

The people voting on this law were clearly unqualified and incompetent to do so - we need to get it repealed. We also need to identify the individuals responsible for trying to cut the 4th estate out of the loop by sneaking this legislation through under the cover of the ChCh earthquake ... and see to it that they lose their jobs. Incompetence is one thing - deliberately undermining democracy by sidelining the 4th estate is something else entirely. Whoever is responsible needs to be sacked.

Yes well Skynet was government operated in Terminator. A Machine designed to take total control, to be able to watch the people and report there every move. So yes, this legislation is like the evil Skynet from the Terminator movie Mr Young, but you're the evil ones. Whether this is about file sharing or something else, the government is looking to control what you do and when you do it and this helps them to both implement a system to track you and the changes to the SIS rules now allows them to hack anyones account at will. National now have the own Evil little Skynet setup.

It just goes to show that the people making these laws have no idea what they're talking about. Maybe that's part of the reason it was pushed through under "urgency".
