Mark Martin walked away with a grin - a lucky man

There was a lucky escape for a driver and an official in the latest round of the Nascar circuit in the Pure Michigan 400.

A frightening incident occurred in the 200 lap race when Mark Martin slid off the track and into a concrete barrier while trying to avoid a wreck further up the field.

A track marshal jumped for safety as the car's gas tank burst - spilling its contents.

While some of the fuel ignited moments later, thankfully there were no explosions and no major injuries.

It was not a fuel tank that erupted as they are in the boot of the car in a rubber bladder inside a steel box, it was a oil cell that erupted as that is right behind the driver. Look at the colour of the liquid it is brown they use ethanol in Nascar.
