One of one-day cricket’s greatest careers appears to be over.
Ricky Ponting has been dropped from the Australian side, despite his and team-mates pleas to play on.
The 37-year-old scored 18 runs, at an average of 3.6 in the series against India and Sri Lanka.
However chairman of selectors John Inverarity said while a return to the squad for the 375-game veteran is unlikely, it is not out of the equation.
"We need to at some stage move on, and we're not ruling him out because one never knows what's around the corner, but we've certainly got the 2015 World Cup now coming into mind,” he told FoxSports.
"I spoke with Ricky this morning, he was disappointed and understandably so, but he took it on the chin. He's a wonderful bloke and he takes everything in his stride."
Inverarity said Ponting will take the next few days to think about his future and may hold a press conference to announce what his decision is.
