There will be no rematch between David Tua and Shane Cameron, with the Mountain Warrior saying he’s not about to give Tua “a leg up”.
In an interview to air on TV3’s Sports Tonight this evening, Cameron says, “I'm not giving him that opportunity again”.
In 2009, Tua knocked out Cameron three times, twice in the first round and then again just seconds into the second round to win the fight.
Since then, Cameron has demolished Monte Barrett in the KFC Godfather of All Fight Nights, knocking him out with a huge right hand at the start of the fourth round.
Barrett had beaten Tua in 2011.
Although Tua hadn't yet sought the rematch, speculation since the Barrett bout has grown about who Cameron’s next opponent will be – money fights with the likes of Tua and current New Zealand heavyweight title holder Sonny Bill Williams, or what many have described as a ‘real’ fight that will see him progress to challenging for a WBO title fight with the likes of Wladimir Klitschko.
The knock out has seen the country get right behind Cameron and he says he’s loving it.
“The public support has been awesome, even pre-fight was really good but post-fight even better because we came away with the result and the way it came was even better,” Cameron says.
Last week, Duco’s David Higgins, co-promoter of the KFC bout, said that Cameron’s knock out of Barrett might have paved the way for a WBO elimination fight.
"He's one punch away from a shot at Klitschko, I really believe that," Higgins said.
The win against Barrett – ranked 12 by the WBO – may mean that when the rankings are released Cameron will fall within the top 10. And with the ranking, comes a real chance of working out a fight with a genuine title contender.
And on the cards would be a number one or two contender, such as Russian Denis Boytsov or American Seth Mitchell, followed up by the winner taking on Wladimir Klitschko.
"Cameron is the hottest heavyweight in New Zealand right now. Shane's had a lot of bad luck. It was about time he had some good luck. And it wasn't just luck, he did it in style,” said Higgins.
"Shane needs to decide if he wants a money fight against the likes of David Tua or wants to have a crack at the world title.”
Cameron’s decision now appears very clear.
“I beat the man that beat him and I really took care of him,” says Cameron.
“I put him to sleep and in four rounds. David couldn't do that in 24 rounds, so I don't need that fight with Tua no more.”
