Spain made footballing history night as they became the first side to win three major tournaments in succession.

Vicente del Bosque's side beat Italy 4-0 to successfully defend the European Championship they won in 2008.

They also won the World Cup for the first time in South Africa two years ago.

In Madrid on Sunday night, Spain fans counted down the final seconds of the match before beginning celebrations that will last into the early hours of Monday morning.

In contrast, Italy fans watching in Rome had to come to grips with seeing their heroes fall at the final hurdle.

Little had been expected of Cesare Prandelli's side heading into Euro 2012, but they beat England in the quarter-finals and then knocked out Germany to set up their meeting with Spain.

However, first half goals from David Silva and Jordi Alba put Spain in full control at the Olympic Stadium and substitutes Fernando Torres and Juan Mata were both on target in the closing stages to seal victory and the title.
