Students staged protests at Auckland University tonight as part of a National Day of Acton raising awareness about education cuts.

A group of around 20 students barricaded themselves in the building after a meeting that was part of a National Day of Action.

Police have now taken control of the protests.

But tension escalated earlier between the students and campus security staff after a window was broken.

At least one protester was arrested.

Earlier today there was a protest at Victoria University in Wellington over cuts to resources and staffing.

The protest quickly escalated into a dramatic clash.

Around 200 students were confronted by staff security while trying to deliver a letter to the Vice Chancellor with their concerns.

Some students say they were pushed and shoved in an altercation with staff on the stairwell.

To George Thats why the protest happened you moron because they are worried about studying. "Immature wannabes" what exactly were they trying to be?? last time i checked these were peaceful protests, the security guards at vic were manhandling people unnecessarily

What a punched of idiots!! They should just worry about studying. If these idiots are our future leaders then our country is in a mess. They all should have been locked up and taught a lesson. Im not against protesting but better to do it peaceful rather than acting like a bunch of immature wannabe's.

Good on you, students! Every country needs free health, education and housing. The rich get richer by trying to make the rest of us poorer. Whatever happened to NZ as an egalitarian country? Free tertiary education is essential for an educated society.

Our students deserve the best quality education and it's a disgrace that the government instead of investing in our future, is slashing funding into higher education!
