VIDEO: Tornado causes extensive damage in NSW

Tornado damages homes in NSW

More than 200 homes have been damaged after a severe weather system moved through parts of New South Wales overnight.

A tornado caused extensive damage to the town of Malabar where emergency services worked to free people trapped inside campervans and homes hit by falling trees and debris.

Rescue teams from across the state were called to the scene and an emergency refugee centre was set up to accommodate the dozens of people left homeless.

Other nearby areas were evacuated as a precaution due to a strong smell of gas.

More than 10,000 homes across Sydney and the central coast remained without power this morning after the strong winds bought down power lines across the area.
