Thirty-eight couples competed in this year's Wife Carrying World Championship in Sonkajarvi.

Organisers said a crowd of eight-thousand attended the event.

Finnish pair Taisto Miettinen and Kristiina Haapanen defended their title when they completed the 253.5-metre track in one minute, 1.22 seconds.

It was the fourth year in succession Miettinen and Haapanen had triumphed in the world championship, a title they first won in 2009.

They finished almost three seconds ahead of Marek Zahkna and Merlin Zahkna from Estonia, who registered a time of one minute, 4.21 seconds.

Anton Khreliats and Mirja Karna from Finland's capital, Helsinki, came third - they clocked a time of one minute, 8.37 seconds.

There were seven countries represented in the event, including couples from Australia, Russia, England and the Czech Republic.

The prize for being crowned Wife Carrying World Champions is the weight of the winner's lady in beer.
