Cairoli tops MX1

3News NZ

The penultimate Grand Prix of the year in Faenza saw Tony Cairoli win his sixth FIM motocross world title in front of an adoring home crowd.

The Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider had established a 76-point lead over Clement Desalle, knowing that he only needed to finish ahead of the Belgian to be crowned champion.

The first race saw Sebastian Pourcel take an initial lead, however, he was soon overtaken by Cairoli to the delight of the home fans, with the Italian maintaining his lead for 17 laps.

Christophe Pourcel, the fastest man in qualification, took second with Desalle settling for third place.

That victory saw Cairoli crowned world champion.

In the second MX1 race, Cairoli and Pourcel exchanged the lead on the opening lap.

Pourcel remained a mere second behind Cairoli as the pair approached the finish line.

But the Italian held on for his second consecutive victory with Gautier Paulin finishing in third behind Pourcel.
