Vanuatu shaken by big 7.1 quake

A shallow 7.1 magnitude earthquake has struck in the Vanuatu Islands.

The US Geological Survey says the quake struck at 12:34am local time (2:34am NZT).

It was centred 124km west of the capital Port Vila on the island of Efate at a depth of 23km.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no threat of a destructive widespread tsunami, but a localised threat existed.
