An aggressive approach by New Zealand fighter Vaughan Scott failed to pay dividends as he lost his first round taekwondo fight at the London Olympics.

The Aucklander was defeated 9-5 in his men's under 80kg bout by seventh seeded Argentine Sebastian Eduardo Crismanich.

Scott came out aggressively and within half a minute both combatants had two points, but Crismanich gradually found chinks in Scott's defence and was up 6-2 at the end of the first round.

An ankle injury in the second round threatened to derail Scott's chances but he recovered and got the score back to 6-5 midway through the round, but two more points had Crismanich back in front 8-5 by the end of the round.

The Argentine got one more point early in round three and Scott couldn't find a way past his defences for the rest of the round.

Scott could get a chance to keep fighting if Crismanich makes it to the final.
