Lawyers for Tony Veitch are highly critical of police releasing a file to media - before going to them.

The 358-page file, detailing allegations from Kristin Dunne-Powell of long-term abuse and physical violence, was obtained by news media this week, under the Official Information Act.

On Wednesday the former broadcaster sought to ban its publication - but has now stopped a High Court injunction.

In a statement, Veitch's lawyer, Stuart Grieve QC, says police had told him they would speak to him before releasing the file to media, but did not.

He describes the police actions as “totally irresponsible”.

This is frustrating, as clearly a circus has been made out of this whole saga, and I suspect a lot of money aswell.

Stuart Grieve QC is right in being disapointed, the police should have informed him of the information being released.

I am not defending Viech, clearly he is guilty as charged, and considering the gravity of his crime, he got it of pretty likely. However I an criticle of the process, before and after this sordid event.

Both the police leaving unprofessional messages on his voice mail (a female officer saying he is guilty to another officer while still on the phone),
The media monopolising the story at the expense of other serious issues, rumours about his ex wife, ect.
